: The Guest Editor Experience & Personal Philosophy

Q: We have worked together before, but this time you became the guest editor-in-chief for ELLE Turkey’s 300th issue; we held meetings, made decisions, chose topics, and took photos. How was this experience for you? Did you like being a magazine editor?
A: I always knew magazine publishing was a tough job from the outside. But when you are inside it, you realize the workload is even heavier. Once you step into it, your concentration, planning, and setting limits—doing all of this without losing your motivation and remembering why you love this job—requires around-the-clock dedication. Normally, when someone’s workday ends, they go home and relax. For me, phone communication didn’t completely stop until 23:30 or midnight. We even shared a common rule in the WhatsApp group for our concept: anyone could write whenever they thought of something. It was a wonderful experience, thank you so much. I will truly never forget this page.

Q: Which stage did you enjoy the most?
A: I was curious, appreciative, and inspired. I really enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions to women artists whose work I admire, and to remind them of something about themselves through interview questions. (Yes, she also did interviews for ELLE this month! Now it’s Serenay’s turn to answer…)

Q: From the very first day, ELLE has closely followed your career and featured you on many covers. How does it feel to see and read about the responsibility and hard work you’ve put in, and how quickly you’ve progressed? Is your inner motivation and drive to work always this high?
A: The sense of responsibility has always been very high. Everyone carries their own responsibility; no one considers it a burden for someone else. My conscience has always kept me balanced on this path. For the cover shot, we cooked up a concept together with our fashion director, Aslı Asil. Reflecting the ancient Roman culture in its DNA, we shot in the unique silhouette of Istanbul with Bvlgari’s one-of-a-kind high jewelry creations, bringing the excitement of the new year. I believe the visual language of the photos successfully reflected this feeling.

Q: In our interview, you mentioned, “Every character changes my life to some extent, or it brings me closer to an understanding and improvement regarding that issue.” For example, what did Leyla (from the series Kimler Geldi Kimler Geçti / Thank You, Next) teach you? What about your other roles?
A: Leyla is a character who is deeply afraid of facing herself, yet boldly dives into the oceans within her own mind. When she wants to solve problems, she struggles like a warrior against the obstacles she encounters. Seeing how easily she can step out of her comfort zone after personal failures taught me a lot. Leyla was a process where I learned to say ‘me first’. As for Şahmaran, its second season came out last summer. The process of that character and her evolution was a kind of spiritual experience for me. The journey of Şahmaran took a long time, with lots of preparation and shooting, and it was a very special project where I looked deep inside my own inner world.

Q: Would you like to be friends with Leyla in real life? What advice or warning would you give her?
A: I would definitely want to be friends with Leyla. I love her vulnerable yet warrior spirit. I wouldn’t give her advice; I would just be there to listen to her without judging or punishing her.

A: I am happy with myself. I can even say I accept myself with my good and bad sides. This is me, I accepted myself. But of course, it wasn’t easy. A: I don’t know, it’s a tough question… Whatever happened, it resulted in who I am today. There isn’t much I would want to change. 2024 was indeed a very bright, active year for me. Right now, my mind is completely focused on the story we started with ELLE’s 300th issue. If I had to describe my current state of mind in 3 words, I would say: Excited, hopeful, and curious.

Q: What do you wish for yourself as we head into 2025?
A: First of all, I want to travel. To go to new places, to experience living in another city for a while. To refresh myself with new colors. And then, to come back and continue creating!

Q: Do you have a specific target or a goal you want to achieve?
A: My goal for the coming years is simply to keep discovering myself, not to stop, and to continue creating things that excite me.
